Help with Wants Vs. Needs

OK....how do you explain wants vs. needs to a 5 year old? Sophie and I were talking last night and you can just tell that she dosn't get it. Also, has anyone else had to cope with the issue of trying to explain that working inside the home is just as important as working outside the home making money?

  1. Maybe try this to teach this concept. Pull together samples of wants and needs. Like a pair of shoes - both fancy and beat up, old ones. Say something like "What do we need to cover and protect our feet?" Do we neeeeeed the fancy shoes, or would those be a want. Then do the same with food (a sugary treat and whole wheat bread) and then material items (TV and the Bible). Then throughout the next few days have her identify and explain which are needs items and want items in her own life. This concept is hard for little ones, so she will need supportive practice until developmentally she is ready to identify on her own.
